Wheelchair Disc Golf

Disc Golf is hard

I love throwing around a frisbee with friends and many years ago when I mistakenly thought running was fun I played a lot of Ultimate Frisbee. I thought Disc Golf would be easy because I’m pretty accurate with a Frisbee.

I was wrong.

Disc Golf isn't frisbee

When Sam and I took his Extreme Motus Off-Road Wheelchair to the Spanish Fork Disc Golf course I had a big surprise the first time I tried to throw the smaller disc.

It banked hard to the right and hit the ground very quickly. Sam let me know the problem was I, “Throw like a girl.”

The Spanish Fork course was perfect for the X3 off-road wheelchair. This isn’t a nicely manicured course with rolling grass hills. We had to roll over rocks, gravel, dirt, logs, and through the weeds in order to make it from the tee to the goal.

Disc Golf Wheelchair

It didn't get easier

I’d like to say that I got better as Sam and I wheeled our way around the course but I didn’t. Sam and I will need a lot more practice before we can compete at the professional level we aspire to.

While we didn’t have much luck playing disc golf we did have fun making this video and goofing around together. And that is what all this is really about.

Is Calf Creek Falls Wheelchair Accessible?

Lower Calf Creek Falls

Hiking to Lower Calf Creek Falls was our most difficult adventure to date for a few reasons.

  1. We didn’t have as large of a team of helpers as previous long hikes like Delicate Arch
  2. Unlike other adventures when hikers volunteered to help that didn’t really happen.
  3. I’m in the worst shape of my life.

Nevertheless our small team of friends and family grit our teeth and made our way over rocks and sand to a waterfall oasis in the desert.

The team

All of the heavy lifting was done by myself, and Sam’s parents Roger and Christine. I was often pushing while they were pulling via the straps on the front.

The X3 can roll over nearly anything but occasionally an obstacle pops up that is same length as the wheelbase of the chair. When you are pushing from the handlebars and the front wheel is hitting a large rock you kinda get stuck and need someone to lift or pull the front wheel up and over the obstacle.

Off-road wheelchair

The Trail

The trail to Lower Calf Creek Falls is a 6.7 mile out and back adventure. You will slowly gain 866 feet of elevation on your way to the waterfall.

If you’re walking this trail is great. If you’re pushing an off-road wheelchair with a width of 35 inches it’s going to be a battle. Moving the chair around over and through these rocky sections was exhausting and I was shattered by the end of the hike.

It doesn’t help that the most exercise I get in a day is when I let loose with a violent sneeze.

I’m fat strong and used my weight as leverage to get Sam up the trail.

Other sections of the trail are sand and those were great! The X3 rolls over the sand like it’s on pavement. Sam’s 9 year old niece Avery often volunteered to push in the sandy sections.

all terrain wheelchair

I don't get tired

Near the end of this hike I was so tired I found myself falling asleep almost instantly whenever we stopped to take a break. Even though I was still standing up.

I recalled a Tiktok video from motivational speaker Jesse Itzler using a trick to make himself feel better while on a 100 mile run. And attempted to use this power of persuasion on myself and Roger. It sort of helped… I think.

Jesse Iztler – I don’t get tired!

we survived calf creek falls

Hiking Lower Calf Creek Falls was very difficult for our small group. If you are thinking about taking an Extreme Motus off-road wheelchair there you need to take an honest look at your level of fitness, take lots of helpers, start slow and then go even slower.

You may need to summon The Power of Greyskull, but if you are determined enough you can do it.

Flying with the Extreme Motus Off-Road Wheelchair

Can I take the X3 on a plane?

We are often asked what it is like to take the Extreme Motus off-road wheelchair on an airplane. Many of our customers want to travel with their X3 visit far off beaches as they check items off their bucket lists.

Air Travel with the X3

I currently know of 2 different Extreme Motus customers who have flown with their X3. Both flew from the Salt Lake City, Utah airport.

The Adams family flew on Delta Airlines to the East Coast to visit Maine. This customer used the X3 as their primary wheelchair. They entered the airport with the X3, went through the TSA security checkpoint, and all the way to the gate with the wheelchair.

Once at the gate he carried his daughter into the plane and the X3 was checked at the gate. They didn’t report any issues traveling through the airport with the X3 off-road wheelchair.

Aloha Extreme Motus

The Crowshaw family recently flew from Salt Lake City, Utah on Southwest Airlines to visit the island of Kauai with their X3.

They also used the X3 as their primary wheelchair and checked it at the gate.

Everyone was very accommodating! They were worried about the weight of the chair but they managed.”

Something to think about when using the X3 as your primary wheelchair on a trip like this is the X3 is meant for the outdoors. It can fit through a standard 36″ door frame. But navigating a resort or fitting into an elevator can be tricky

The X3 is about 6 feet long so making sharp turns in a tight hallway is tough. You may need to fold up the chair to navigate indoor areas like this.

Can I check the X3 as luggage?

I wish I had a better answer to this question. So far the 2 people who have flown with the X3 have gate-checked it.

If and when I have a report of one of our customers checking the X3 off-road wheelchair as luggage I will update this section of the article.

Is Bryce Canyon National Park Wheelchair Accessible?

Is bryce canyon wheelchair accessible?

Extreme Motus teamed up with Tim Hughes of KSL News Radio, as well as Mark Wade and Bob Grove from Road Trippin with Bob and Mark to make Bryce Canyon National Park wheelchair accessible.

Sam had been to Bryce Canyon once before. He was 5 years old and his father Roger carried him on his back. At the end of that hike, he told his wife Christine, “This is probably the last time we will be able to visit Bryce Canyon.”

33 years later Sam is too heavy to be carried in a backpack but the Extreme Motus X3 off-road wheelchair was making it possible for their family to visit National Parks again.

Wall Street and Queens Garden Loop

We started our adventure by descending Wall Street in Bryce Canyon National Park. This section of the trail has many switchbacks and when you’re pushing Sam in the Extreme Motus X3 it’s difficult not to run when going downhill. The chair sort of pulls you along.

Bob and Mark who were there to take pictures and video of Sam and I in the off-road wheelchair were left in the dust and Sam and I ran and laughed our way down the switchbacks. It was such a fun trail.

Off-road wheelchair bryce canyon

There was one spot at the bottom of Wall Street where the trail becomes very narrow, makes a sharp turn, and turns into stairs that the X3 struggled to navigate. The chair had to be lifted and turned so we could continue the adventure.

Bryce Canyon

As we entered the narrowest part of the Wall Street there was a man playing a pan flute. The music he created gave a mystical feeling to the adventure.

A helping hand

At one spot the trail became too narrow. We had to back up and find an alternate route. What we found was a steep drop into a dry creek bed and back up some steep rocky terrain.

As we surveyed the problem several other hikers offered to help get Sam and the wheelchair safely through.

This happens often on our adventures. Curious strangers willing to help, and wanting to be a part of helping others enjoy the outdoors.

Having fun = hard work

It is so easy to sit on the couch and let life pass you by. Planning these adventures takes work. Planning an adventure with a group as large as this one takes A LOT of work! Emails, phone calls, packing, driving. Get it all done and you will have some amazing memories.

Bob Grove and Mark Wade did an amazing job helping to coordinate this adventure. You can read their article on the Road Trippin With Bob and Mark Website.

Tim Hughes interviewed Sam and Ryan and you can listen to that story here.

Ruby’s Inn at Bryce Canyon hosted our large group. Gave us comfortable rooms to sleep in, and made us feel like VIPs when we had dinner at Ebenezer’s Barn & Grill

Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this trip happen and those who helped us make Bryce Canyon National Park wheelchair accessible.

Are Wheeleez Tires Durable?

Why does extreme motus use wheeleez tires?

Extreme Motus uses Wheeleez Balloon tires on the X3 because they are durable, lightweight, and provide a soft ride to the person riding in the chair. This helps keep the cost and the weight of the X3 down because don’t need to add a suspension system to the build.

Sam and I have been torture testing the Extreme Motus X3 and in turn Wheeleez balloon tires for over 2 years at skateparks, National Parks, State Parks, and mountain trails near our home. Together we have made over 300 TikTok videos of our adventures. So far we have experienced only one flat tire, and it came after a day at a mountain bike park where we were jumping the chair several feet into the air.

We finished our fun at the bike park, but the tire managed to develop a slow leak that day and found the chair with a flat tire the next morning in the garage.

On the off chance you manage to get a puncture in the Wheeleez tire they can be easily repaired and put back into service.

In service for 15 years

Not long ago Extreme Motus was looking into ordering an entire container of Wheeleez to keep up with our manufacturing demands.

I spoke with a person in Hong Kong and they told me there are some Wheeleez that have been in service for 15 years!

The California Coastal Commission provides free beach wheelchair rentals at many beaches along the California coast. Some of these wheelchairs have been using the same set of tires for 15 years. How’s that for durability!

Wheeleez Tires

All terrain Wheeleez

The Extreme Motus isn’t just for the beach. We manufacture the ultimate hiking/adventure wheelchair. Can we do long walks on the beach? No problem.

Can we do long walks through Mordor to Mount Doom while being hunted by elite Uruk-hai orcs? Also no problem.

Uruk-hai Orcs

We have customers who push their 90-year-old mother around the block because the chair is comfortable and supportive for them and they don’t want to feel every bump in the sidewalk. We have customers who like to get banged up while they compete in Dirty Dash mud runs.

The Extreme Motus X3 is an off-road wheelchair that can do it all.

Advenchair VS Extreme Motus X3 Off-road Wheelchair

Extreme Motus X3

Advenchair

The Extreme Motus Off-road wheelchair is designed for people who need a caretaker to help them go exploring. The powerful disk brakes make hiking back down the mountain safe and easy.

Many of our customers purchase an X3 for their children who have grown too big to be transported in a backpack. These families want to continue exploring and enjoying the outdoors with the entire family and the X3 allows them to do just that.

The Advenchair (cool name!) is a rugged off-road manual wheelchair that is pushed or pulled by friends and family to allow wheelchair users to visit places they may have had a hard time getting to in a standard wheelchair.

One great feature of the Advenchair is its ability to transform from a long adventure wheelchair into a wheelchair that is a more “normal” size. After your hike, you can make your way inside a restaurant for a snack.

Extreme Motus off road wheelchair

Pros

Pros

Brakes – One of the main advantages of the X3 is the brakes. Each wheel is equipped with independent disk brakes. Wheelchair hiking without brakes is dangerous.

Supportive Seat – The X3 uses a racecar seat which gives additional support on the sides. Wheelchair users who can’t push themselves often need this additional support to stay sitting up straight.

Frame – The anodized aluminum frame of the X3 has been torture tested by Ryan and Sam everywhere from Skate Parks to National Parks. They have taken it off jumps and done everything. This chair is bulletproof.

Brakes – Rear disk brakes will allow you to safely descend steep terrain.

Transformer – Being able to remove the front wheel to turn the all terrain wheelchair into a regular wheelchair is a cool feature.

Rugged – Solid design will allow it to take a beating as you and your friends explore your favorite trails

Cons

Cons

Care Taker Assist – The X3 is not designed to be self-propelled. A caretaker must push the rider in the chair. This may not be the best choice for a wheelchair user with good upper body strength.

Interchangeable Wheels – The X3 only has one option for wheels. The large low-pressure, tires give the rider a comfortable ride.

Supply Chain – The X3 is often on backorder during the summer months because of supply chain issues.

Price – With a price of $9,950 this the most expensive manual all terrain wheelchair we have reviewed.

Weight – This wheelchair tips the scale at 60 pounds which puts it on the heavier side of the chairs in this category. It weighs 55 pounds with the front wheel removed.

Suspension – Advenchair only has suspension on the front wheel. Without suspension under the rider it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Conclusion

The X3 from Extreme Motus is the ultimate hiking wheelchair. Its large low-pressure tires, powerful disc brakes, a super durable frame, and optional luggage systems make the X3 the perfect adventure chair. If you are looking for a wheelchair that will allow you and your family to adventure outdoors then the X3 is the right choice for you.

The Advenchair looks to be a solid piece of outdoor mobility equipment. This off-road wheelchair gives our own Extreme Motus X3 good competition and we always welcome more mobility devices that will help people enjoy the outdoors!

It is a little heavier than the X3 but comes with a transforming feature the X3 doesn’t have. It’s also a lot more expensive and you could buy 2.5 X3’s for the price of one Advenchair.

Do your research decide what features you need. Figure out your budget and buy the chair that is going to get you outside and enjoy all the nature has to offer!

The Perfect Wheelchair?

At Extreme Motus we want to help you find your perfect wheelchair. Be sure to check out the Off-road Wheelchair Research Center to help find the perfect outdoor mobility device for you.

Getting outside is important to our mental and physical health. Wheelchair users tend to spend more time inside than non-wheelchair users because they don’t have the right equipment to get out into nature.

Choose the right equipment and you’ll have one less excuse to sit inside and miss out on the beauty our planet is waiting to share with you.

Grit Freedom Wheelchair VS Extreme Motus X3 Off-road Wheelchair

Extreme Motus X3

Grit Freedom Chair

The Extreme Motus Off-road wheelchair is designed for people who need a caretaker to help them go exploring. The powerful disk brakes make hiking back down the mountain safe and easy.

Many of our customers purchase an X3 for their children who have grown too big to be transported in a backpack. These families want to continue exploring and enjoying the outdoors with the entire family and the X3 allows them to do just that.

Rather than placing your hands on the wheels of the Grit Freedom chair and pushing, the operator uses levers that attach to a chain drive to propel themselves. Not only does this method of propulsion keep your hands clean during off-road adventures it’s also a more efficient way to push.

These levers are about twice as efficient as pushing directly on the wheels allowing you to conquer more difficult terrain. Depending on where you grip the levers you can maximize your effort for torque or high speed.

What Happened to the Hexhog 6×6 Wheelchair?

The HexHog 6x6 is Dead

At Extreme Motus we occasionally get contacted about the Hexhog because this review in our Research Center: “Meet the Hexhog” has become the number one search result when searching for the company on google.

I decided to look around and see what I could find.

Return to Sender

I attempted to email the company at Sales@hexhog.com but the email was rejected.

Address Unknown

Currently, www.hexhog.com leads to a personal website for Stella Levinson. But the contact information doesn’t lead anywhere so I think the website is just a placeholder until someone comes along and wants to purchase the domain name.

Social Media Accounts Gone

Hexhogs social media accounts have been deleted. I searched for them on all the major social media websites and couldn’t find any active accounts.

What Happened to Hexhog?

I was unable to find any kind of official statement from the company. But when a company goes out of business the most likely reason is they didn’t make enough money to stay in business.

Hexhog had a cool product but it cost $30,000 – $42,000 and weighed 600 pounds. This is the most expensive and heaviest all-terrain wheelchair I have come across during my research. I would guess it was difficult to find enough customers to keep the manufacturer busy enough to continue development.

When there are other products like the Action Trackchair, Tracfab, and Terrain Hopper that are also capable off-road wheelchairs at a lower price point. It must have been difficult to compete.

It’s unfortunate but luckily there are other options to choose from.
